Instructions

    • 1

Understand that different kinds of illegal activity on Web sites may need to be reported to different authorities. If you are in doubt as to who are the proper authorities, contact your local law-enforcement agency to report the Web site. Be prepared to provide the reporting officer with the URL, or Web site address.

    • 2

Contact the copyright holder when you suspect a case of copyright infringement, for example from a site that encourages or allows the unauthorized downloading of copyrighted material such as music, movies or other digital files. If you do not know who the proper copyright holder is, contact the United States Copyright office to report a possible copyright infringement (see Resources below).

    • 3

Use the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's CyberTipline to report suspected cases of child victimization or exploitation through a Web site (see Resources below). This center works closely with law-enforcement agencies to investigate any instances of child-pornography distribution or creation on the Internet as well as in the rest of the world.

    • 4

Get in touch with your local law-enforcement agency if you have been the victim of fraud via a Web site online. Examples of such cases may be: the misrepresentation of goods or services; the collection and illegal distribution of personal data, such as social security numbers or other forms of identity theft; and trafficking in stolen or illegal goods.

Tips & Warnings

  • Parents can help their children avoid victimization via the Internet by monitoring their children's Internet usage or by installing parental controls on their Internet browsers. Encourage your children to come to you if they suspect they have been approached in an inappropriate way online, either through an illegal Web site or chat room.
