Understand the Lemon Law Codes Used in Ohio

Step1
Learn the basics of Ohio lemon law codes at the Better Business Bureau Web site (see Resources below). You can also follow links to resources that will help you mediate complaints about lemon vehicles.
Step2
Visit the Web site of the Ohio Attorney General (see Resources below). Here you will find a copy of the Ohio Lemon Law that you can read. You can also learn about your rights under the lemon law by getting the state's lemon law brochure or following links to help you file a complaint.
Step3
Notarize copies of any requests you make for the manufacturer to repair your vehicle. Send all such queries via registered mail, and request the return receipt. This will enable you to prove the dates you sent your query, and the date the manufacturer received it.
Step4
Copy and keep records of all attempts to service the vehicle at auto garages. Confirm that a precise record of the work attempted is noted on the work order. Paperwork will be important if you have to file an arbitration claim or go to court.
Step5
Protect yourself by making sure you get all required maintenance done as outlined in the owner's manual for the vehicle. If the manufacturer can show that you didn't maintain the vehicle, you may lose your eligibility for refunds or for replacement of the lemon vehicle.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is not necessary to hire an attorney to pursue remedies under Ohio's lemon law, but you may wish to consult one with experience in consumer protection or lemon law cases if you have specific questions about your situation.
  • Under certain circumstances, you may have the right to sue the vehicle manufacturer if it fails to comply with the law. You may also be entitled to recover attorney's fees if the suit is successful.
