Realize that there are a number of different fields that make up the general category of rocket scientist. These include the fields of aeronautical engineering, space engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and electronic engineering.

Discuss each of these fields with your high school counselor. Investigate which colleges and universities have the best reputations in each field. Apply to at least four colleges or universities.

Complete your bachelor's degree in engineering. Make the decision whether you wish to enter the workplace or continue on for a post-graduate degree in engineering. Obtaining a master's degree will on average boost your salary by 15 to 20 percent, and a doctorate will boost it another 10 to 15 percent.

Seek employment whenever you finish your schooling by investigating oportunities in the aerospace, communications and defense industries, or in academics and research. The good news is that with the number of graduating engineers falling, employment opportunities are increasing.
