Iced tea is a summertime tradition. Part of this tradition involves sweetening tea with spoons of sugar which never quite dissolve, often forming a small mountain at the bottom of the glass. The problem is sugar does not dissolve easily into cold water. A better way is to sweeten iced tea with a simple sugar syrup.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Bring 2 cups of water to boil in a small pan on the stove top.

  2. Step 2

    Add 1 cup of sugar.

  3. Step 3

Stir with a wooden spoon until the sugar is completely dissolved.

  4. Step 4

Allow the syrup to cool to room temperature.

  5. Step 5

Add the sugar syrup to your iced tea. Start with a small amount and add more to taste.

Tips & Warnings
  • Any leftover syrup can be stored in the refrigerator in a jar or bottle.
  • The basic ratio is 1 part sugar to 2 parts water. The recipe can be doubled or halved easily.
  • The syrup can be flavored with mint leaves, lemon slices or whole spices such as cinnamon stick or cloves. These should be added while it's boiling and strained out when it cools.
  • The syrup can be used for other cold drinks like iced coffee or cocktails.
  • If you're in a hurry, you can cool down the syrup by adding some ice cubes. This will dilute it a bit so if you plan on doing this you'll want to start out using a little less water in the recipe.
  • Sugar syrup can cause nasty burns, so be careful.
