Blankets are a favorite gift for a new baby. Hand-crafted blankets are especially treasured. You don't need to have any sewing skills to create an adorable baby blanket for a friend's baby or your own. With the right fabric and a pair of scissors, you can make a soft, cuddly blanket for a special baby today.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 yard of fleece fabric
  • Baby detergent
  • Sewing scissors
  1. Step 1

Go to a fabric store and pick out a fleece fabric in a color and design appropriate for a baby blanket. Have a store employee cut the fabric into a 1-yard length.

  2. Step 2

Wash the fabric with cold water on gentle cycle, or hand wash. Use a detergent specially formulated for babies skin. Lay fabric flat to dry.

  3. Step 3

Spread fabric out on a large flat surface. Turn one of the shorter ends towards you and smooth out any wrinkles.

  4. Step 4

Cut a fringe along one short side by making 3-inch deep straight cuts about a 1/2-inch apart.

  5. Step 5

Tie a single knot at the base of each cut strip to complete the fringe along one side of the blanket.

  6. Step 6

Turn the fleece to the other short side and smooth out the wrinkles. Make the same size cuts a 1/2-inch apart and then tie knots to match the other side.

  7. Step 7

Admire your completed fleece baby blanket. Give as a gift or keep for your own baby.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use sewing scissors for a clean cut. Scissors that have been used on paper will be too dull to cut the fabric smoothly.
  • Do not make your cuts any closer than a 1/2-inch apart or the fleece fabric might rip off and damage the blanket when you are tying the knots.
