The ACT (American College Test) is an important test. Keep in mind, however, that it's only one of the many tests you have taken in the past and will take in the future. How well or poorly you perform on it will have some effect on your future, but it is not likely to be life-changing. Following these simple tips will assist you in passing the ACT.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Calculator

Step1
Pace yourself. If you find you are taking too long on a problem, skip it for the moment and come back to it later.
Step2
Answer all the questions you are sure of first.
Step3
Read all the instructions carefully. It is important to know exactly what is being asked, so you avoid confusion or mistakes.
Step4
Use common sense when answering problems.
Step5
Take a quick look at the answers after looking at the problem. Eliminate any answers right away that are completely out of range. This will leave you fewer options to choose from, increasing your chances of getting the correct answer.
Step6
Make sure you understand what the question is asking. Some problems will have unnecessary information.
Step7
Go with obvious answers and your first instinct. Do not second-guess yourself!

Tips & Warnings

  • Understand the scoring. You get a point for a right answer. You lose a fractional point for a wrong answer. There is no deduction for omitted answers, or for wrong answers in the math section's student-produced response questions.
  • Do not change an answer unless you're sure you made an error.
  • You can write in the test book to cross out wrong answers and do scratch work.
  • Avoid stray marks on the answer sheet. A machine scores your test and cannot distinguish between a correct answer and a careless doodle.
