Take college-prep courses throughout high school. Be ready for science and math. Today's merchant fleet is very technical, and the Merchant Marine Academy needs to ensure that all graduates can work in a technical environment. Everyone graduates with a Bachelor of Science Degree.

2
Be ready to go to sea. All midshipmen complete a Sea Year, which actually takes place over their sophomore and junior years. The midshipmen complete courses while getting real-world experience aboard ship.

Get in shape physically. Prepare with conditioning exercises such as sit-ups, pull-ups and push-ups as well as running. Midshipmen are expected to be in shape when they arrive. Anyone not able to pass the fitness test upon arrival will be put in a remedial group, and anyone who continues to fail the test will not be able to continue at the school.
