How to Apply to the Merchant Marine Academy
The United States Merchant Marine Academy, located in Kings Point, New York, admits approximately 275 students each year. In addition to normal college-entrance requirements, applicants need to pass a physical fitness test, a medical examination and secure a Congressional nomination. Due to these requirements, it is best to begin the application process early.

Ensure you meet the basic eligibility requirements. You must be a U.S. citizen, be of good moral character and be at least 17 but not yet 25 on July 1 of the year you enter the Merchant Marine Academy. Applicants who are married, pregnant or have dependents will not be accepted.

Take the SAT or ACT college-entrance exams. There is a minimum-score requirement on the critical reading and math sections of the SAT and ACT. These scores are set for each entering class. Refer to the Merchant Marine Academy Web site for the current minimum scores.

Start the application process in the spring of your junior year of high school. Fill out Part I of the application on the Merchant Marine Academy Web site. The application may be printed and mailed to: Director of Admissions, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, 300 Steamboat Road, Admissions Center, Kings Point, New York 11024-1699; however they prefer it be done online.

Apply for a nomination from your local Congressperson and U.S. Senators from your state. Check your representatives' Web sites for the application process and requirements, as they differ. Nominations are based on merit, not political connections.

Get in shape physically. Prepare for the fitness test through conditioning exercises and running. Continue to exercise throughout the application process in order to be ready for the requirements of the Merchant Marine Academy.

Finish the application package. Write the essay required in Part II of the application package. Get high school transcripts and recommendations from teachers as required in Part III.

Schedule and take the Candidate Fitness Test and the medical exam.

Tips & Warnings
Take four years of English, advanced science and math classes, get good grades, do your best on the SATs and ACTs, participate in sports and assume leadership roles in extracurricular activities throughout high school.
Fill out your paperwork early. This gives you time to address any problems that may arise.
Talk to recent midshipmen about their experiences. Visit the Merchant Marine Academy if possible, in order to get a feel for life at the Academy.
