How to Apply to the Coast Guard Academy

The United States Coast Guard Academy, located in New London, Connecticut, admits approximately 265 students each year. Tuition is fully funded, and all graduates serve a minimum five-year commitment in the Coast Guard. Unlike other Service Academies, a Congressional nomination is not required for admission. A fitness test and medical exam will be expected.

        Ensure you meet the basic eligibility requirements. You must be a U.S. citizen, be of good moral character and be at least 17 but not yet 23 on July 1 of the year you enter the Coast Guard Academy. Applicants who are married, pregnant or have dependents will not be accepted.

        Take the SAT or ACT college-entrance exams. There is no minimum qualifying SAT/ACT score, but test scores and class rank play a major role in the selection process.

        Start the application process by filling out the online application on the Coast Guard Academy's Web site.

        Get in shape physically. Prepare for the fitness test through conditioning exercises and running. Continue to exercise throughout the application process in order to be ready for the requirements of the Coast Guard Academy.

        Write the essays and fill out the supplemental forms, which will become available to you online after completing the initial application.

        Interview with a Coast Guard Academy Representative. Discuss your goals, qualifications and reasons for wishing to attend the Coast Guard Academy. Do not wear shorts or jeans. The interview is recommended, not required.

        Schedule the medical exam immediately upon receiving the scheduling information. The same exam can be used for any Service Academy or R.O.T.C. scholarship application.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Take four years of English, advanced science and math classes, get good grades, do your best on the SATs and ACTs, participate in sports and assume leadership roles in extracurricular activities throughout high school.

    • Talk to recent cadets about their experiences.

    • If possible, attend the one-week summer program, Academy Introduction Mission, in order to get a feel for life at the Coast Guard Academy.

    • Follow directions and do not miss deadlines.

    • Do not be late for the interview.
