The Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway covers 500 miles from Oregon's Crater Lake National Park to California's Lassen Volcanic National Park. Along the way, you can see snow-capped mountains as well as volcanic terrain. You'll also encounter crystal lakes, evergreen forests and lovely waterfalls.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Begin south of Chemult, Oregon, on Highway 97 and turn west onto Highway 138. Cross the Cascade Mountain Pass and drive south into Crater Lake National Park.
Step2
Stop at Crater Lake, the deepest lake in the United States. Formed in what was once a volcano, Crater Lake is more than 1,900 feet deep. The lake's cool clear water stays that way with heavy snowfall (over 500 inches a year).
Step3
Drive south to Klamath Falls, OR. Play golf or fish while you watch for bald eagles, for which this area is known.
Step4
Cross the border into California and follow Highway 97 to Mt. Shasta. Climb one of 17 routes up this 14,162-foot mountain or go horseback riding and bicycling.
Step5
Continue driving to the 129-foot Burney Falls waterfall located northeast of Redding, CA, in the McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park. Hike along the trails through the evergreen forest.
Step6
Drive on and stop at the Hat Creek Rim Overlook and gaze down into Hat Creek Valley, 1,000 feet below. Notice nearby Lassen Peak, Burney Mountain, and Mt. Shasta.
Step7
Join the Lassen Scenic Byway at Old Station. Follow the loop around Lake Almanor and head north to Lassen Volcanic National Park. Camp overnight in the park or spend the evening at the Drakesbad Guest Ranch. Call (530) 595-4444 for information on camping or call (530) 529-1512 for information about the guest ranch.
