How to make Peanut Butter Suet for Birds

Feeding birds in the wintertime in Maine is important especially if you feed them all year long. This easy to make recipe is a great winter feed for all year long feathered residents.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 cup crunchy peanut butter
  • 1 cup lard
  • 2 cups quick oats
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup wheat flour
  • 2 cups cornmeal
  • 1 cup wild bird feed

Instructions

      Melt peanut butter and lard together.

      Stir in remaining ingredients.

      Press into cake pan.

      Allow to cool, then cut into squares.

      Store in freezer or cool place.

Tips & Warnings

  • If making suet with children as a project have parents melt lard and peanut butter because of possibility of getting burnt.

    Did you find the hummer nectar recipe? If not, all you do is mix 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. Bring the water just to the boiling point, dissolve sugar and let cool. Some say to add red food coloring, some say don't. As long as your feeder has red, it's probably not necessary. Can be stored in the fridge for a couple weeks.

    Not an avid go out in the wild and search for them , but love to watch them by the window as they flit around. Kinda relaxing like watching fish in an aquarium.

    As far as being safe for humans to eat-- all ingredients are human friendly. Although not sure how the lard and bird seed would taste.
