Vroom…….did the bike size attract you as it whizzed past? Well too low or high bike can make riding the bike difficult. Select a bike that will provide the necessary comfort while sitting on it and driving. Here is how to measure the frame size of a bike:

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Measure the inseam length. Stand straight against a wall.

  2. Step 2

Keep your legs apart with a distance of 8 inches.

  3. Step 3

Place a book firmly in the crotch area to give an impression of sitting on a bike. Make sure the back portion of the book touches the wall.

  4. Step 4

Take a tape and measure the length from the floor until the top of the book in centimeters.

  5. Step 5

Multiply that figure with 2.54. For example, if the inseam length is 35, then the result would be 35x2.54=88.9. Again multiply the inseam length by .67. That is 88.9 x.67=59.56 rounded of to 60.

  6. Step 6

Note that the frame size will be 60 centimeters.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take a test ride before buying the bike. It would give you fair idea about the height and frame.
  • Know that that there are separate bikes for men and women. So don’t generalize the length for people of same height.

on 9/28/2008 According to these instructions, I need a 54" frame (or 137 cm)... I'm only 5'7"!! I think Step 4 is supposed to read: "... in INCHES" - not in centimeters!!!! If you measure your inseam in centimeters, then you can skip multiplying it by 2.54 (because that is the conversion to inches part.)

on 10/17/2007 This is an article about how to determine what frame size would be best for you, NOT (as the title falsely states) about how to measure the frame size of a bike itself.
