How to Spend a Weekend at Lake Powell
Lake Powell is located near Glen Canyon and lies in both Utah and Arizona. Lake Powell is most known for its boating and water skiing. There is definitely more than meets the eye in Lake Powell and Glen Canyon. Camping, hiking, mountain biking and boating are just a few of the activities available for enjoyment at this magnificent outdoor area. Follow these steps to plan your weekend getaway.

Participate in a park program, held in the summer months by park rangers. Topics include geology, wildlife and the native Anasazi people. Rangers are also available throughout the park at some of the more prominent and frequently visited sites. Find them at Rainbow Bridge, Defiance House and the petroglyphs below the dam. The visitor centers also offer presentations.

Take a water tour. Choose a cruise to Rainbow Bridge, ride the Wahweap Bay Paddlewheeler or tour the Navajo desert tapestry. The Canyon Explorer tour and Antelope Canyon tour visit the canyons. See below to find more information on these tours.

Take a float trip between Glen Canyon Dam and Lees Ferry. Operated by Aramark, the tours are 15 miles long and safe for all ages. They float through a high and narrow gorge. Go fishing in Lake Powell, which has a variety of game fish. You'll find river trout, striped bass, crappie and walleye. Purchase a fishing license at the marina. Before fishing, learn the fish limits and other rules and regulations at the marina.

Go boating for the ultimate Lake Powell experience. The lake is full of inlets shored by sandy beaches. There is plenty of room for speed boats and water skiing. House boating is a favorite activity on Lake Powell. For boat rental information, call (800) 528-6154 or (602) 278-8888. Advance reservations are highly recommended. Kayaking and canoeing are also great ways to see the lake. Tours are available from 1-hour to multiday excursions.

Swim! The lake is ideal for swimming, with 80-degree temperatures in August. Exercise caution around watercraft, and avoid swimming in busy boating areas.

Take a turn water skiing. This lake is perfect for skiers of all ages and skill levels. Water skiing is prohibited in heavy boat traffic and inside narrow canyons. Be sure to check the marina for boating regulations and safety tips before you embark on a skiing trip.
