How to Apply for the Alabama Bar Exam

Completing the Alabama bar exam application is a difficult and time-consuming process. As soon as you have decided you would like to practice law in Alabama, follow these steps to start registering for the Alabama bar examination.

  • Money for fees
  • MBE certification form
  • Authorization form
  • Driving abstract
  • Printer
  • Notary public
  • Passport photo
  • Fingerprint cards
  • Internet access
  • Law school dean's certification form
  1. Step 1

    Visit the Alabama State Bar Association Web site to download and print the law student registration application and the application for admission.

  2. Step 2

    Complete the law student registration application carefully, double-check for errors and have it notarized.

  3. Step 3

    Collect necessary materials to include with your law student registration, including a current driving abstract from the Department of Public Safety, a law school dean's certification form, an authorization and release form and two fingerprint cards.

  4. Step 4

    Mail your completed law student registration to the Alabama State Bar.

  5. Step 5

    Review the application for admission and note the filing deadline for your desired bar exam date.

  6. Step 6

    Fill out the application for admission carefully, double-check for errors, affix a recent passport photo and have the application notarized.

  7. Step 7

    Collect necessary materials to include with your application for admission, including three attorney affidavits, the MBE certification form and any additional information requested.

  8. Step 8

    Attach your bar fees to your application.

  9. Step 9

    Mail your application to the Alabama State Bar well before the stated deadline.

Tips & Warnings
  • The law student registration and application for admission can be filed together or separately.
  • If additional space is needed anywhere on your applications, use plain, standard, white paper.
  • Keep a copy of your application for your records.
  • Alabama offers special testing accommodations for specific circumstances. Visit the Alabama State Bar Association Web site for a questionnaire to see if you qualify.
  • Answers on your application must be typewritten. Your application will be returned otherwise.
  • Do not use blood relatives for character references or attorney affidavits.
  • Answer all questions completely and thoroughly. Incomplete answers will cause your application to be delayed or returned.
  • Failure to file amendments to your application can result in denial of certification to sit for the bar exam or withdrawal of a previously granted certification.
