For a truly local experience, the Shilin night market in Taipei is not to be missed. It is considered to be the biggest and oldest and has something to offer everyone. This market is huge and has a real carnival type feel with lights, games and lots of people. It gets going around 5 p.m. or so and lasts through the night.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Travel there by taxi or take the MRT and get off at the Jiantan station.
Step2
Arrive hungry. There are many delectable, inexpensive foods to sample.
Step3
Enjoy a huge variety of cheap goods including clothing, shoes and bags. Nearly anything one might need will be on display.
Step4
Dress for the weather. This is not a mall and the stalls are not air-conditioned.

Tips & Warnings

  • Bring cash, which can help when bartering if prices are not marked.
  • If you are in need of the restroom while there, it will not be a pleasant experience. Have a really strong peppermint gum or candy and put it in your mouth just before entering. This will give your nose something to do while you are taking care of business.
