on 7/31/2007 A standard sewing machine, with a leather needle, can sew two layers of 3.5 ounce leather. Deer hides that are professionally processed are usually thinner than that. I don't really think you will have an issue. My favorite sewing machine for use on leahter is a 20 year old machine. Good luck! Misty

on 7/27/2007 I have several deer hides and I want to make them into pillows. I was thinking of either a smooth finish leather for the back or maybe suede. I don't think my old sewing machine can handle even really soft thing suede and I need to replace it anyway. What kind of sewing machine would I need to make leather pillows?
