How to Deal with Wretches in Gears of War on Hardcore Difficulty

These little buggers were dangerous on Casual difficulty, and they present an even bigger problem on Hardcore difficulty, even though they die quickly. On your first walk through Hardcore, it is entirely possible that you will find yourself being eaten alive. If that’s the case, read on!

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

1. Keep them at a distance. Wretches can take you apart in record time if you let them get close. Back away from them while shooting, but keep your eyes open! You may be backing into another!
2. Use the shotgun on Wretches at close range. As with all targets, the shotgun is only truly effective at very close range. Use the Lancer or Hammerburst on Wretches at longer ranges.
3. Back into another room if you need to. Try and create a choke point if you are faced with a score or Wretches. A doorway or narrow corridor is perfect for creating a bottleneck to trap Wretches in.
4. Watch the ceiling! Wretches liked to climb on Casual, they LOVE to climb on Hardcore.
5. Give your teammates the Attack order when faced with Wretches. At least this way, they soak the first wave.
6. Use caution when chainsawing Wretches! It's OK to do this up until you head into the refinery, but after that, you’ll mostly be facing Lambent Wretches. These are extremely dangerous on Hardcore. Two of them exploding is enough to kill you.
7. Back away from any Lambent Wretches you shoot! Their explosions HURT!
