Things You'll Need:
- A few hours of spare time
- A friend or two
-
Step 1
Rid yourself of any notions that your prom dress has to be expensive to look gorgeous. It doesn't have to be a particular brand or style to be a good dress. If you think a dress looks good on you, you'll look good at the prom with it, no matter where it's from.
-
Step 2
It may be worth asking to see if you have a sister, cousin, friend, or neighbor who would be willing to let you have their old dress. Of course, this may not be an option you're comfortable with, especially if these people went to the same school as you do and you're worried about being unique.
-
Step 3
Shop during the "off-season", either during the middle of summer or the middle of winter, or right after all the proms in your area are finished. Stores will generally lower their prices or put dresses on sale during these times. You may find incredible discounts this way.
-
Step 4
Don't be afraid to shop at discount or second-hand stores. A dress you get here may be a little bit used–but someone obviously liked it enough to wear it in the first place.
-
Step 5
Don't snub dresses with slight flaws. You, your mom, or a tailor may be able to alter the dress to better suit you, or to patch up a little flaw. A dress with a non-severe rip or spot will probably sell for a lot less and still be wearable after alteration.
