Making a michelada is a great way to add some extra flavor and spice to your beer. This drink is ideal for celebrating Mexican-themed holidays such as Cinco de Mayo, or for enjoying with your favorite Mexican food.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Your favorite Mexican beer.
  • Limes - about 3 for every 4 drinks you'll make
  • Tabasco sauce
  • Ice
  • Salt

Step1
Salt the rim of the glass. There are two ways to do this: you can moisten the rim with water, or you can run a wedge of lime around the rim of the glass and then dip it into a plate of salt.
Step2
Add ice to the glass. 3-4 cubes will do.
Step3
Pour about 3 drops of Tabasco over the ice. Use less if you're sensitive to spice and more if you're a big fan.
Step4
Squeeze the juice of half a lime over the ice and Tabasco.
Step5
Pour your Mexican beer into the glass. Stir concoction lightly.
Step6
Garnish the rim with a sizeable wedge of lime. If desired, squeeze the lime into the drink. Take the first sip and enjoy your michelada!

Tips & Warnings

  • Modelo Especial is the recommended beer for this drink, but any Mexican beer such as Corona, Tecate, Pacifico or Dos Equis will do.
  • Serve this drink on Cinco de Mayo to your family and friends.
  • To prepare a number of micheladas easily, set up an assembly line and then go step by step.
  • If you're preparing micheladas for a crowd, go easy on the Tabasco since some might find it difficult to deal with the heat. If anyone wants a spicier drink, they can add a couple of drops of Tabasco and stir it in.

on 5/14/2008 Here in Houston Micheladas are popular all the time not just holidays ;) Modelo Especial is by far my favorite beer but may I suggest you try a Sol Michelada. Also, what is a Michelada without a shrimp or oyster (yuck!) in the bottom of the glass. Very nice article, makes me thirsty though!

on 5/9/2007 Great recipe, Shama. I'm not a big fan of beer or spices, but I will probably give this a go.
