Step 1
Decide which state in which you would like to practice law.
-
Step 2
Download or request an application from your state's Board of Bar Examiners. Look at your state's website for the application. Most states have dowloadable versions.
-
Step 3
Review the application deadlines.
-
Step 4
Gather all the information for the application. This includes college and law school transcripts and a criminal background check.
-
Step 5
Fill out the application carefully. Review your responses and double-check for errors.
-
Step 6
Have another person review your application. It's easier for someone to see an error that you may have missed.

Step 7
Include payment for your application. Depending on which state you are in, the exam may be significantly more expensive for first-time applicants.
-
Step 8
Return your application by the deadline or before.
