If you need to take the bar exam, you'll need to apply first. Bar examinations are administered in February and once in July in each state. It's important that your application is accurate and on time.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide which state in which you would like to practice law.

  2. Step 2

Download or request an application from your state's Board of Bar Examiners. Look at your state's website for the application. Most states have dowloadable versions.

  3. Step 3

    Review the application deadlines.

  4. Step 4

Gather all the information for the application. This includes college and law school transcripts and a criminal background check.

  5. Step 5

Fill out the application carefully. Review your responses and double-check for errors.

  6. Step 6

Have another person review your application. It's easier for someone to see an error that you may have missed.

  7. Step 7

Include payment for your application. Depending on which state you are in, the exam may be significantly more expensive for first-time applicants.

  8. Step 8

Return your application by the deadline or before.
