Instructions

    • 1

Consider hiring a Russian translator to sit in on your meetings.

    • 2

Have your business materials printed in Russian.

    • 3

Bring your best suits. Russians are very fashion conscious. Men and women should wear long sleeves. Women should wear skirts below the knee.

    • 4

Greet with a firm handshake, and exchange business cards (present yours Russian-side up). For men greeting women or women greeting women, the handshake should be softer. Men should wait for a woman to extend her hand before shaking. Maintain eye contact.

    • 5

Be patient. It is not uncommon for Russian associates to arrive up to two hours late.

    • 6

Keep presentations short and to the point. Avoid doing electronic presentations with flashy visuals.

    • 7

Be aware that Russians see compromise as a sign of weakness. They may refuse to back down until the issue is conceded or it is clear that you will continue to stand firm.

    • 8

Get everything in writing. Be very specific in your contracts.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your Russian associates invite you out for drinks, accept the invitation. This is the best way to strengthen your relationships.

  • Bring gifts such as chocolates or fine wine. If your associates have children, bring small toys for them.

  • Don't wear winter coats or boots into offices, theaters and other public places. Find the coat room and leave your outerwear there.
