Poison oak usually grows on hillsides and close to berries and oak trees. It grows like a vine, can wrap around trees and can grow to have a trunk 12 inches in diameter. The removal of poison oak plants can be a dangerous process. Here’s how to remove poison oak painlessly.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Washable shoes
  • Ladder
  • Disposable gloves
  • Protective clothing
  • Chainsaw
  • Pruners and shovel
  • Disposable mask
  • Heavy duty plastic bags
  • Disposable booties or plastic bags rubberbanded around ankles
  • Rubber chemical gloves
  • Poison oak soap
  • Disposable suit
  • Disposable hat
  • Multiple sets of disposable items

Step1
Remove poison oak in the coolest part of the day. Wear a disposable suit over cotton clothes, a disposable hat and mask, and rubber chemical gloves over disposable gloves. Don't clear the poison oak if you have broken a sweat. The poison oak reaction is most severe when your pores are open.
Step2
Each time you break a sweat while clearing, you must change clothes and bag the disposable suit (be sure to secure the bag). Wash the clothes you were wearing (separately from other clothes) and shower using poison oak soap.
Step3
Place plants in heavy-duty bags, making sure not to puncture the bag. Do not leave bags open. Bags containing disposable clothes or poison oak plants need to be handled in the same manner as the plant itself when dumping.
Step4
Clean the tools with denatured alcohol twice. First with one pair of gloves, then with a fresh pair of gloves. Be sure to clean the handles and anything else the original gloves touched while cleaning.
Step5
Wash all clothing and shoes worn while clearing separately before they are handled normally again.
Step6
Remove all the roots when clearing. The roots and branches will leak a black oil about 15 minutes after you cut them, so they will be easy to see if you missed any.

Tips & Warnings

  • The best time to remove poison oak is when the leaves have dropped. The plants are less potent when dormant.
  • Purchase poison oak soap at a pharmacy.
  • Poison oak should not be handled when the leaves are red.
  • Touch plants only with the palm of a double-gloved hand.
