How to Visit the White House

You are making plans to visit Washington D.C. There is no greater place to make arrangements to visit while in the city than the White House. Located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, many great leaders have visited and lived in the home. Being that it is still in use today and must protect the United States Commander in Chief, it is not as easy as buying a ticket at the entrance and being set loose. The following will guide you into the White House free of charge.

  1. Preparation Instructions

      Plan your trip with 10 people or more.

      Submit a request to your member of Congress up to 6 months in advance for entry into the White House.

      Receive documentation for what you need to submit to the White House to be approved for the visit, such as names, driver's licenses and birth certificates.

      Receive confirmation of the planned visit to the White House.

    The Visit

      Call (202) 456-7041 (for the hearing impaired, (202) 456-2121) prior to leaving for the White House. They will give any last minute changes or cancellations.

      Arrive at the White House. There is no parking near the White House so the public transit system is greatly encouraged. The Metro rail, a taxi or city tours are also an option.

      Notify the visitor's entrance of your arrival.

      Enjoy your tour.

      Visit the visitor's station after the tour.

Tips & Warnings

  • Submit your request as soon as possible. There is limited availability plus you need adequate time to gather and submit the items needed by White House Security prior to your visit.

  • Plan your visit to the White House Tuesday through Saturday 7:30 a.m. through 12:30 p.m.

  • The hotline is available 24 hours a day.

  • For wheelchairs or the need for additional assistance while visiting the White House, ask at the visitor's entrance.

  • Do not bring any sort of bag, such as a back pack, purse or hand bag, food or drink, strollers, cameras, video cameras, tobacco, grooming items, pointed objects including pens, or any weapons. You are permitted to bring an umbrella, wallet, cell phone and keys.
