How to Ride the Washington Metro to Mount Vernon
Mount Vernon is located sixteen miles south of Washington, D.C. on the banks of the Potomac. This day trip begins with a self guided tour. You will see the mansion, George and Martha's tomb, slave quarters, kitchen, stables, greenhouse, and gardens. There is something for everyone at Mount Vernon.

Identify the nearest Metro station, and purchase a day pass from the vending machine at the entrance.

Board the train and take the necessary transfers to board the Yellow train South to the Huntington Station. This is the last Metro station on the Yellow Line in Virginia.

Get a transfer to the Fairfax Connector Bus before exiting the Huntington station on the lower level.

Catch the Fairfax Connector Bus to Mount Vernon at the bus stop located near the Metro station exit.

Enjoy the trip through the Virginia countryside, exit the bus at Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens, and purchase a ticket for the walking tour.

Check the bus schedule and select your return bus time allowing several hours to enjoy all that Mount Vernon has to offer.

Reverse the process to return to the Huntington Station and catch the next train north to Washington, D.C.

Carry small bills for bus fare. The fare is discounted for Metrorail to bus transfer.
This is an outdoor experience. Wear comfortable walking shoes and carry a backpack for your camera and bottled water
Get in line for the mansion tour upon arrival as lines can be long. Weekday afternoons are less crowded.
