1
Determine what type of soccer the player will be playing. Indoor and outdoor soccer have different turfs and that means different needs for the cleats.
-
2
Bring along the socks and shin guards that the player will be wearing during the games and practice. Buy socks and shin guards if not already owned.

3
Select and try on the right style cleats starting with your normal shoe size. Depending on the brand you may need to go up a half size or more.
-
4
Walk around the store to see if the soccer cleats are rubbing or fit excessively tight. Leather stretches after wear, but just a little bit. Some players like their toes at the tip for more feel of the ball, where others like room in the toes.
-
5
Choose fit over looks. If the lime green pair with red stripes fits better than the black with white stripes, get the lime green.
-
6
Shop around town. Visit several stores if possible. Soccer stores are a great place to start, but then go to a sporting goods store, and even department stores are selling sports cleats.
-
7
Buy the cleats and keep the receipt. Wear them in your home before taking them outside, many times they can be returned if not fitting correctly, and they are not dirty or scuffed. Just don't walk on any wooden floors with your cleats because it will damage the wood and you might slip and hurt yourself.
