How to Buy Fishing Rods on a Budget

Assume that you are on a limited budget and decide to repair your favorite rod. Replacing all the eyelets on a rod is more expensive than buying a cheap one. A good fishing rod will last indefinitely if used only in freshwater and stored properly, but that's not so in salt water. Between the salt, sand, humidity and sun they perform properly for about 25 to 40 percent of their fresh water usage time. Why not buy a rod that costs a fourth to a third as much as your good one and save money? The difference between the life and performance of an expensive rod and a cheap rod is about as small as the difference in the performance of an expensive and cheap watch with quartz movements. In addition, the slightly better accuracy and distance of an expensive rod is less important in salt water fishing.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy short rods. They are much easier to handle, particularly on small man powered boats where it is impossible to stand up. The shorter rod makes it easier to clear a fouled hook or land a fish.

    • 2

Remember that if you wade fish or fish from a small boat, store your favorite rod and get a short rod with ultra light to heavy action with polished stainless steel eyelets without ceramic linings. The heavier terminal tackle and lures used in salt water will ensure you won't notice the difference.

    • 3

Recall that for surf fishing from the shore, get the same type of rod described above but go for length (at least 8 feet) with heavy action, as your terminal tackle can weigh up to a pound. A ten-foot rod in a sand stake will get the line high enough so people walking along the beach won't run into the line.

Tips & Warnings

  • Prolong the useful life of your rods by rinsing in fresh water after each use and drying in the open air. When the rod no longer functions as an entity, use the good parts as spares for the next rod. Model airplane glue and 100 percent nylon thread will do just fine for replacing eyelets.

  • If an eyelet gets bent, which happens often, and has to be straightened the corrosion process is accelerated.
