Old Baldy Trail is the shortest path that gets hikers to the summit of Mount Wrightson, the highest peak in the Santa Rita Mountains. The end of the trail is steep and difficult, but the hike is worth the effort when you see the breath-taking views at the top of the 9,400-foot summit. Although the desert mountains are beautiful to look at, keep on eye on the trail while hiking. Many trails intersect and the summit hike may end up back in the parking lot if hikers are not careful.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Preparation

Step1
Allow six hours for this nine mile hike. Add more time for resting, enjoying the views and snack breaks.
Step2
Bring along plenty of water. The hike is strenuous towards the top and hikers can get dehydrated quickly, especially in the summer months.
Step3
Tell someone responsible where the intended hike is and what trails are going to be followed.
Step4
Bring some cash to pay the parking fee.

Hiking Day

Step1
Drive south from Tucson on I-19 to exit 63. Follow the signs to the top of Madera Canyon. The trailhead that Old Baldy starts from is located at the end of Madera Canyon.
Step2
Hike the beginning leg to reach Josephine Saddle. This part of the trail is always climbing but not overly steep. Be aware of the trail as there are several shortcuts that may or may not lead to the summit.
Step3
Stop and visit the Boy Scout Memorial at Josephine Trail. Pay your respects to the three children that lost their lives on the mountain.
Step4
Keep going straight on Old Baldy trail past Josephine Saddle, be sure to look around so the you don't miss Mount Hopkins Observatory.
Step5
Reach Baldy Saddle by following the switchbacks. This part of the trail is tedious but it does not last forever; they just seem that way because there are several trails and they are steep. Follow Baldy Saddle as this is last leg to the summit. This is a good place to take that well deserved break.
Step6
Follow the last few signs to Mount Wrightston. Enjoy and relish getting to the top.
