How to Fill Rotted Wood

Older homes tend to have door frames or window sills that are rotted. Many believe the entire frame needs to be replaced when in fact, you may be able to salvage the old wood. The following will help you fill and repair the rotted wood.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Exterior wood filler
  • Putty knife
  • Paint brush
  • Sandpaper
  • Plastic covering
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Epoxy wood filler
  • Paint or wood stain
  • Hammer
  • Chisel

Step1
Remove the piece of rotted wood.
Step2
Cover the area well with plastic in the event of rain or snow buildup.
Step3
Place the rotted wood in a warm, dry place.
Step4
Allow it to dry for several weeks.
Step5
At an angle, drill 3/16-inch holes into the rotted wood.
Step6
Apply epoxy wood filler into the wood.
Step7
Dry the wood again for two to three days.
Step8
Apply exterior wood filler with a putty knife.
Step9
Level the filler to the rest of the wood.
Step10
Dry the filler.
Step11
Sand the fixed piece of wood.
Step12
Paint or stain the wood.
Step13
Allow it to dry again.
Step14
Reinstall the fixed piece of wood.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear rubber gloves when applying the epoxy.
  • Use a hair dryer to quickly dry the wood.
