On the coast of Baja, Mexico, Rosarito Beach has become a major tourist attraction for southern California and Arizona vacationers. Only 20 miles south of border, it's a quick trip to a small paradise. Of course, one just doesn't pack the car and hit the road--there is a little prep involved. Follow these steps and make your next road trip to Rosarito simple.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check your driver license or passport and be sure they're valid so you can cross the border at Mexico. Rosarito is an easy 20 miles across the border, but proof of American citizenship will be necessary to come back.

  2. Step 2

Reserve a room at a beach hotel if possible. Rosarito is not an expensive city, so the hotels on the beach versus the inland hotels in the city are well worth the little extra money.

  3. Step 3

Be prepared to have your car or your person searched both going to and coming from Mexico. Certain items are not allowed to cross the borders and some may need permits.

  4. Step 4

Consider taking the bus from Tijuana, or drive a car across the border to Rosarito Beach. It's a very short distance and there's a well maintained toll road all the way down.

  5. Step 5

Buy car insurance if you're driving any car across the border. Most U.S. insurance companies will not cover any damage or loss to a vehicle while in Mexico.

Tips & Warnings
  • Follow Mexican laws while in Mexico. Jails there have a reputation for good reason. It is not a country that you are innocent until proven guilty.
