Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Consult your physician about taking Propoxyphene. Propoxyphene is a prescription medication that should only be taken under the supervision of a qualified doctor. Do not take Propoxyphene if the medication has not been prescribed to you.

  2. Step 2

Ask your physician for a Propoxyphene prescription if you are in pain. Propoxyphene is classified as a narcotic analgesic which means it can be used to ease moderate to acute pain. Your doctor will know if Propoxyphene is the right medication to alleviate your pain or if another medication will work better in your situation.

  3. Step 3

Take Propoxyphene orally as prescribed by your physician. The usual prescription is 65 mg of Propoxyphene every 4 hours to reduce a patient's pain. The maximum daily dose of Propoxyphene is 390 mg. Do not exceed the daily dose of Propoxyphene.

  4. Step 4

Do not drink alcohol while you're taking Propoxyphene. Alcohol will severely increase the effects of Propoxyphene. Do not drive while taking Propoxyphene, especially if you’ve also consumed any amount of alcohol. Your ability to operate a vehicle will be greatly impaired while on this medication.

  5. Step 5

Keep Propoxyphene and any other medicine away from children. Taking any medication, especially a strong pain reliever like Propoxyphene by children could be lethal. Make sure you store Propoxyphene in a place that is out of the reach of children.
