It would stand to reason that when you wash a load of laundry, you're also "cleaning" the washing machine. That assumption is wrong, though. Actually, bacteria can harbor inside the washing machine tub and the detergent and stain removers that you use can actually cause build up in the pipes. That buildup can cause your washing machine to have a sour odor. If you think your washing machine could use a good cleaning for itself, follow these simple steps.

Tips & Warnings
  • Leave the lid to the washing machine open when the washer is not in use. This will help prevent odors from building up.
  • If your water or sewer lines happen to become contaminated, perform these steps before washing any clothes after the water is safe to use again.
  • If the odor persists, consult your owner's manual.
