Chichen Itza is a three hour drive from Cancun, Mexico. It is a must see for travelers that vacation to Cancun and love seeing historical sights. The Mayans constructed a number of famous temples and pyramids in this area. The most preserved of these is the Nunnery.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Small sense of adventure
  • A full day during a Cancun vacation.
  • A little bit of cash

Step1
Know your stuff! Do some research and read up on the history of the Nunnery. You can also ask some of the locals in Cancun. They will know a lot of information about the ruins.
Step2
Walk through the ancient living quarters of the Mayan royalty. This site is considered to be the place where the leading Mayans called home.
Step3
Watch for the wonderful paintings and reliefs. Almost every wall has these stunning pieces of artwork embedded on them.
Step4
Explore some of the hidden secrets. There are several of these throughout the site. If you see a dark hole leading into a recess, then do not be afraid to go exploring. It will make you feel as though you are the first person discovering these ancient ruins.
Step5
Go early! The Nunnery gets busy as it is a popular tourist attraction.
Step6
Take a tour. There are many tour companies in the Cancun area.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take a camera!
  • Wear a good pair of shoes and appropriate attire. The area around Cancun can be hot and humid.
  • Buy some of the native artwork and crafts. They are generally very low priced and will make wonderful keepsakes.
  • Be careful! There are dark areas with steps.
