Even though it's been listed as one of the best places to live in the United States, many people still think of Yuma as a place to pass through--not a place to stay and visit. This growing city is a backdrop to many great historical stories. Here are a few tips on how to enjoy a day in the town.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Map
  • Good walking shoes
  • Water
Step1
Stop at Saint Thomas Mission and check out a part of the southwest's history. It's listed as one of California's historical landmarks but it's actually located in Arizona.
Step2
Walk around Yuma Crossing State Park and take in the majestic scenery. Hike across part of the 90 acres that sits directly along the Colorado River. You can camp, eat a picnic lunch or take a couple of hours to appreciate the desert beauty. The visitor's center houses small shops and the entire park is open seven days a week, except holidays.
Step3
Visit the Yuma Territorial Prison State Park. In its day, this prison held Arizona's most dangerous men. Now it's one of Arizona's most visited state parks.
Step4
Experience the Colorado River on guided tours. Some tours stop at historic sites and others cruise along the river while your guide excites you with famous and obscure facts about the area.
Step5
Learn about the region's native wildlife when you visit the Imperial National Wildlife Refuge. You'll be delighted to see desert animals and plants, as well as the flora and fauna that live along the lush green marshes of the Colorado River.

Tips & Warnings

  • While visiting during the summer, bring plenty of water. Dehydration and sun stroke occur quickly.
