In many homes, one of the most used appliances is the washing machine, but lack of choices is not a problem in this area. There are front loaders, washers loaded with tons of bells and whistles, washer-dryer combos or just your normal base model. You'll want to choose correctly though, because you can drop a small fortune on a new washer. Here's how to pick the best one for you.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Shop around at as many stores as possible. Different chain stores carry different name brands. You'll need to go to different types of stores to see all the options that are out there.

  2. Step 2

Compare similar models. Note taking will be very helpful in this area. Trying to remember what model has the same options as another can be confusing. Having it written down can ease the stress of the decision making.

  3. Step 3

Check manufacturers' Web sites for more information on the products you have on your short list. There are usually also technical specifications and warnings about washers on these sites.

  4. Step 4

Ask questions about manufacturer warranties and store-offered extended warranties. Find out if they overlap or if they're truly extended warranties. No need to have the same warranty from two different companies.

  5. Step 5

Find other new owners. Ask friends and neighbors who have recently purchased washing machines for feedback. They can be a great resource in your decision making. The product you think you want, may be your neighbor's new nightmare.

  6. Step 6

Compare prices and payment options carefully. One store may have no payments for six months but the price may be hundreds more. At another store you may be able to price match and get the financing. It doesn't hurt to ask.

  7. Step 7

The delivery of a new washing machine is another option that you must consider. With delivery, professional installation is usually included. Ask to be sure.
