Congratulations, you're going to have a baby! Now, along with all the other things you need to do, you need to choose a name. Considering all the names out there, this might feel like an overwhelming task. It doesn't have to be, just take a deep breath and relax. There are some basic steps to follow so your baby won't go without a name.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Brainstorm a list of names you like. Carry the list with you and add to your list every time you hear a name you find interesting. You can get ideas from television, radio, books and people you know.

  2. Step 2

Look for names that have special meaning to you. You may want to pass down a traditional family name or the name of a special family member to your baby. Ask your parents if there are any special names in your family you don't know about.

  3. Step 3

Consider whether you know anybody with the names on your list. Knowing someone who has the same name can be a deciding factor. You won't want to call your kid by a name that causes negative thoughts or feelings. Mark those names off your list.

  4. Step 4

Mix up the names of your list into various combinations. Decide which names work best as first names or as middle names. Mix and match until you have several combinations you like.

  5. Step 5

Choose a few of the names you've picked out and use them for awhile. Use all forms of the name if it can be shortened or changed into a nickname. Make sure you like the way it sounds in daily conversation.

  6. Step 6

Write the full name down and read it. Make sure all three names look good together and flow well.

  7. Step 7

Narrow your list down to two or three choices by the time you go to the hospital. After you have your baby, you may decide the first choice just does't fit and you like your backup name better.

Tips & Warnings
  • Family members may have a lot to say about your choice of names. Graciously consider their opinion but remember, the choice is ultimately yours.
  • The name you give your baby will be the name they have as an adult. Some names might be cute on babies and children, but could be embarrassing as they got older.
  • Remember that children can sometimes be cruel. Consider whether the name you are leaning towards can easily be turned into a school yard taunt.
