Finding Inexpensive Lodging

Decide if a hostel associated with Hostelling International or an independent hostel is right for you.

Book reservations as far in advance as possible, at hostels in the locations you plan to visit. Hostels are much less expensive than hotels or ther boarding establishments.

Getting Around Cheaply

Purchase a Eurail pass for travel across different European countries. This is a great way to see the countryside as you travel, and it is much cheaper than other forms of travel in Europe.

Take public transportation when staying in large cities or towns, such as the Rome Metro. This is a great way to see European cities, and it will not cost you nearly as much as renting a vehicle.

Rent a bicycle when possible. Many large metropolitan areas provide bike rentals. It is a cheap way to travel, and it is great for you too.
Eating within a Budget

Eat only one meal or less per day in restaurants.

Purchase food items from markets that are ready-to-eat or prepare sandwiches for at least two meals per day.

Tips & Warnings
Generally, the farther in advance you make the hostel reservation, the cheaper it will be.
If hostels are not your style, bed and breakfasts are an alternative. They are not as inexpensive as hostels, but are less than hotels.
University dorms for students traveling in the summer or campgrounds are other inexpensive options.
Hostels under Hostelling International are better for families traveling with children.
If you are a member of the American Automobile Association (AAA), present your card at hostels and tourist sights to receive applicable discounts.
If you are a student or teacher, research discounts and grants for travel to Europe. Most students are eligible for International Student Identity Cards (ISIC). The ISIC offers many discounts.
Independent hostels often have no curfews, where hostels with Hostelling International often enforce curfews as early as 9 p.m.
