Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Learn the meaning of the word. It is difficult for a child to work with words that have no semantic meaning. Learn the definition and use it in a sentence or story.
Step2
Apply the phonics rule. Every spelling list will feature one or more phonics rules. Ask the teacher or look at the spelling book to find the phonics rule for this week. Think of other words that follow the same rule. Try spelling those also.
Step3
Listen carefully to the beginning sound, the middle sound, and the ending sound of each word. Identify which letters make each sound.
Step4
Count the syllables. Have your child clap for each syllable.
Step5
Look for prefixes or suffixes. Look for the word's grammatical function. Is it plural or singular?
Step6
Play games to practice listening because most spelling tests are dictation. For example: "I am thinking of a word that means_____." (Insert the definition.) Another game would be to create a rap, dance or cheer.
Step7
Practice actually writing the words using different media. For example: write the words using shaving cream, chalk on the sidewalk, alternate ink color for every other letter, or use fragrant markers.
