Horseback riding has been a part of human history for over 4,000 years. If you love to ride horses then planning a horseback riding trip is a must. Having your own horse is not required either.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Small amount of experience with horses
  • Sense of adventure
  1. Step 1

Decide on a destination. This is totally up to you. It generally has to be in an area away from big cities, but you can choose from a myriad of places from the Rocky Mountains, to northern California, or the Appalachians in the East.

  2. Step 2

Once you pick your destination do some research on the Internet for ranches or guided tours in that area. Popular places like Yellowstone will have several different avenues for you to choose from.

  3. Step 3

Prepare for your trip after you have made your decision on exactly where you are going to go. Remember to take the essentials like cameras as horseback riding can be the best way to see the beautiful countryside.

  4. Step 4

Check to see if food and drink are provided on the trip. If not, bring your own. Ask how long the trip will take and bring enough food and drink to last the whole time.

  5. Step 5

Consider taking lessons or going riding with a friend who has horses if you are not an experienced rider. If you are not using your own horse, then building some knowledge and experience will help you enjoy the trip. And you will not have to worry about getting bucked off the horse!

Tips & Warnings
  • If you take a guided tour, make friends with your guide. He or she can be extremely helpful and will generally have a vast amount of knowledge in the area.
  • Do a good amount of research. Hotels may include packages with your stay, particularly in popular tourist locations.
