Encourage a Child to be More Independent

Teaching a child to be more independent can often be a challenge. How many times have you heard a child say that he can't do something? You may feel that it is easier and takes less time if you just do it yourself. However, one of our jobs as parents is to make sure our children grow up to be independent. Follow these simple steps to encourage your child to be more independent.

Instructions

    • 1

Encourage your child to try to do something on his own before helping him. When you do help him, take the time to teach him how to do it so he will know how to next time.

    • 2

Give opportunities for responsibility. Even young children are capable of responsibility around the house. Start small at first: have them put away toys, put dirty clothes in the hamper or feed a pet. Doing things on their own boosts their confidence as well as their self-esteem.

    • 3

Expect it from your children. If you expect your child to be responsible and independent, she will surprise you by rising to the occasion. Do not underestimate children. They are capable of so much more than we believe they can be.

    • 4

Reverse roles. While taking a walk, have the child tell you what to do when you get to the corner. This is a great learning opportunity for them and it shows you just how independent they can be.

    • 5

Give lots of praise. Children want to know what they are supposed to do, not just hear what they are doing wrong. Point out those situations when they are being independent. We sometimes take the good behavior for granted, so make sure to point it out and reinforce it with praise as often as you can, and you will see it increase in frequency.
