Choosing a pot for your houseplant can sometimes be overwhelming. There are many different sizes, colors, designs and they are made out of different materials. You should choose a pot that compliments your room decor, is the right size for your plant and is made out of a material that will help keep your plant healthy.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide how much you want to spend on your pot. The less expensive pots are plastic, terra cotta and foam. Plastic and foam pots come in a variety of designs and colors. Terra cotta pots are usually red but can be painted. The more expensive pots are fiberglass resin and ceramic glazed. These pots are more durable and you can find one to match just about any type of decor.

  2. Step 2

Determine which material is best for your plant. Terra cotta pots tend to accumulate salts and alkali which can be harmful to some plants. African Violets for example will not do very well in a terra cotta pot. The other types of pots would be a better choice for that plant. However, plastic pots do not allow for good drainage and, when they get hot, tend to "cook" the roots of the plant.

  3. Step 3

Determine the size of the pot you need. Some plants like crowded root spaces while other plants like to spread out. Determine which type your houseplant is and that will help you choose what size pot you should get.

  4. Step 4

Determine how much maintenance you want to put into your houseplant. Terra cotta pots dry out very quickly so you have to water your plant more often. The other types of pots hold their moisture for a longer period of time so you would not have to water as much, but they may also offer poor drainage.

  5. Step 5

Determine what you want your pot to look like. Have fun with it. You can accent any room with a beautiful potted plant. Consider putting a small plastic pot into a nice basket or iron container. There is no limit to what you can do with houseplants.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure that the pot you choose has good drainage holes for your plant.
  • Whichever type of pot you choose, they all can stain your floor or carpet. It is a good idea to keep them up on a plant stand.
