Italian Clematis is a rapidly growing vine with beautiful lavender-blue to purple flowers; it can grow 10 to 12 feet long and usually blooms mid-summer to early fall. This vine can also be used as ground cover. Growing Italian Clematis can be relatively easy if you follow these simple steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Individual containers
  • Garden soil
  • Trellis, fence or arbor
  • Pebbles
  • Garden trowel
  • Gardening gloves

Grow From a Seed

Step1
Purchase a packet of Italian Clematis seeds from your local nursery.
Step2
Plant the seeds in individual cups filled with garden soil. If you want to transplant the vine to your garden in the spring, then plant the seeds in late winter. There should be holes in the bottom of the cups for water drainage.
Step3
Water regularly and make sure they get plenty of sunlight.
Step4
Set them outdoors for a few hours everyday, increasing the time each day for a week. This will acclimate your plants to the outdoors.
Step5
Transplant to your yard when the vines reach 6 to 8 inches in length.

Plant Your Italian Clematis

Step1
Purchase an Italian Clematis from a local nursery if you did not grow one from a seed.
Step2
Purchase an Italian Clematis from a local nursery if you did not grow one from a seed. Find one that has healthy green leaves and is already blooming. You may want to look for an online nursery that will ship one to you.
Step3
Dig a hole 6 to 8 inches deep, depending on the size of your vine. Plant your Italian Clematis. Fill the hole with rich garden soil. Make sure that the roots are completely covered.

Tips & Warnings

  • Plant multiple vines 4 to 6 feet apart.
  • Put a few pebbles at the bottom of your hole before adding the Italian Clematis to ensure good water drainage.
  • You may need to attach your vine to a stake until it gets big enough to attach to the fence, trellis or arbor.
