How to Visit the Dallas World Aquarium

Don't let the name fool you. The Dallas World Aquarium is more than a bunch of fish swimming in tanks. This multi-level building is as much a zoo as it is an aquarium. You'll feel transported from downtown Dallas to a jungle as you stroll through the lush exhibits. Located at 1801 N. Griffin St., the Dallas World Aquarium is a must-see on your visit to Dallas.

Start your tour in the rainforest canopy on the top level of the aquarium. Overlooking a waterfall, the canopy has plants and animals native to the rainforest in Venezuela. You'll see howler monkeys and toucans, as you make your way to the next level.

    • 2

Move along to the Rainforest Understory Tour. Crocodiles, piranhas, birds and amphibians are found in this amazing exotic habitat.

    • 3

Marvel at the endangered manatees in the River Tour. These giant mammals were rescued from fishing nets in Venezuela. Take your time viewing the other interesting animals in the aquarium section.

    • 4

Grab a drink and quick bite to eat at the Jungle Cafe. Located in the Canopy area, the Jungle Cafe is open between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

    • 5

Stroll through the Mundo Maya exhibit to experience the ancient culture from the Yucatan region. Take pictures of the jaguar and stop in the 40-foot long shark tunnel.

    • 6

Wander outside to the South Africa tour. Watch the playful black-footed penguins splashing in the water or sunning themselves on the rocks. There are also birds and rock hyrax in this exhibit.

    • 7

Pick up a souvenir in one of the four gift shops conveniently located throughout the building.

Tips & Warnings

  • Call the aquarium to find out if there will be any special feeding times on the day you plan to go.

  • Go on a weekday and plan to be there when the aquarium opens at 10 a.m. to avoid heavy crowds.

  • Take a camera to capture pictures of all the beautiful habitats and animals.

  • The temperature inside is warm, so dress appropriately and drink plenty of water.
