How to Enjoy a Swimming Hole in the Greenbelt

The Austin Greenbelt is home to hiking trails and hidden swimming holes. Wooded trails lead to hidden waterfalls and secluded pools. While there is no shortage of places to take a dip, there are some things to know before you go.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Sunscreen
  • Proper shoes

Step1
Decide where you want to go. There are swimming holes located right in the heart of Austin, and there are plenty outside of town, too. Factor in drive time and personal interests when choosing your destination.
Step2
Conduct some research. Get online to gather useful information about specific swimming holes. Some sit on privately owned land and have strict rules for use. Learn about entry fees, hours of operation and exact location through the Internet.
Step3
Dress for the occasion. Wear comfortable clothing like cutoffs and a tank top with your swimming attire underneath.
Step4
Plan for a short hike. Shoes should be suitable for rocky terrain, so rethink those flip-flops.
Step5
Apply sunscreen, and bring more sunscreen along for reapplication throughout the day.

Tips & Warnings

  • Call ahead for water conditions. Some locations aren't open to the public if the water level is too high or too low.
  • To avoid crowds, go on a weekday when most people are at work. Weekends are usually pretty crowded.
  • Confirm that coolers are allowed and find out what specific rules apply to food and drink items.
  • Leave valuables at home. To enjoy a swimming hole, all you really need is swimming attire and a towel. Wallets, jewelry and phones should be left behind, as there are no secure storage options.
