We constantly hear of people losing their way in the mountains. It can be extremely dangerous to lose your bearings in any natural setting. Mountains can particularly be dangerous because of swift temperature and weather changes, and the possibility of aggressive wildlife.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Map and compass
  • Proper attire and gear
Step1
Tell someone exactly where and when you are going hiking or climbing in the mountains.
Step2
Travel with another person or with a group.
Step3
Take a compass and map.
Step4
Take your time on the hike and study the landscape. Try to remember specific things, like a strange tree or rock formation.
Step5
Turn around and look at your back trail every few minutes. This will help you be familiar with the look of the landscape on your way back.
Step6
Mark your progress. This can be done with a small cut on a tree or by using chalk to write on a rock.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pack plenty of water and snacks depending on the length of the hike.
  • Even if it is the summer and 90 degrees at the base of the mountain, pack a small jacket or sweater. Temperatures can drop quickly at high altitudes.
  • Be wary of wildlife and make sure to keep adequate distance between you and any large animal.
