The Mayan civilization was one of the most advanced of its kind in the ancient world. This civilization dominated the Central American region from 250 A.D. to near 1000 A.D. They built magnificent pyramids and temples, and had breathtaking works of art. A site that was considered the center of the Mayan world is located at Chichen Itza—modern day Mexico. Visiting these ancient wonders can make for a wonderful vacation given the rich history, beautiful scenery and pleasant climate.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Camera

Step1
Start your journey in Cancun, Mexico. The Chichen Itza sites are only a short drive away.
Step2
Go early. The temples and pyramids get busy, as they are popular tourist sites.
Step3
Make sure to see El Castillo and the Temple of the Warriors. These structures are two of the most important and stunning Mayan constructions.
Step4
Take your trip on the vernal equinox (March 20 or 21) or the autumnal equinox (September 20 or 21). El Castillo is famous for the sun casting shadows of serpents upon its steps at these two times.
Step5
Take a guided tour. These tours will allow you to see the sites in a structured and very informed way.

Tips & Warnings

  • Dress for the hot, humid climate.
  • Buy some of the native artwork and crafts. They generally are very low priced and make wonderful keepsakes.
  • Be careful on the steps, as some of them can be steep and dangerous.
