How to Reach the Summit at Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs, Colorado

Pikes Peak is the most visited mountain peak in the United States. It is the second most visited peak in the world behind Mt Fuji in Japan. It reaches an altitude more than 14,110 feet and is the farthest east peak in the Rockies. There are several different ways to reach its summit, some easy and some difficult.

Things You'll Need:

  • Proper attire and gear
  • Camera

  1. Step 1

    Take the Pikes Peak cog railway. This small train runs 8.9 miles up the mountain and gives you a unique view of the surrounding environment.

  2. Step 2

    Drive up the Pikes Peak Highway. The 19 miles of roadway offers an array of stunning views as it climbs more than 7,000 feet from the base of the mountain.

  3. Step 3

    Prepare those lungs and take the Barr Trail. Starting from the Manitou Springs, this trail winds its way up the mountain over a 13-mile path. An average of 15,000 people a year attempt to reach the summit using the Barr Trail.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take your time and enjoy the sights!
  • Look for Pikes Peak Ranger personnel if you require assistance.
  • Do not litter. Throw away any garbage in designated bins.
  • Be prepared for the mountain temperatures and weather. The temperature can drop suddenly at high altitudes.
  • Be careful at high altitudes. Breathing can become much more difficult in the thin air.
  • If you hike up the Barr Trail, be wary of any wildlife you may encounter. Wild animals should always be given a large berth.
