It is almost inevitable that your baby will need her diaper changed at the worst time, in the worst location, and there are still some public places that are not equipped with a changing table. If you find yourself in an area without a changing table, following these steps can make changing a diaper in a car a viable option.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Plastic bags
  • Diapers
  • Baby clothes
  • Diaper bag
  • Changing pad
  • Baby wipes
  1. Step 1

Collect the necessary supplies, such as wipes, changing pad, a fresh diaper and clean clothes if needed.

  2. Step 2

Place the gathered supplies where you can easily reach them. The backseat is the easiest place to change the diaper.

  3. Step 3

Lay your baby next to you in the backseat. If you have to use the front, lay the baby in the seat and stand outside the car next to the seat. Place the changing pad under the baby.

  4. Step 4

Remove soiled clothes from the baby, if necessary, and set them aside. You can attend to them after you are finished changing the diaper.

  5. Step 5

Remove the soiled diaper from the baby and fold it closed. Place the folded diaper out of the baby's reach.

  6. Step 6

Use wet wipes to clean the baby's skin.

  7. Step 7

Place a clean diaper on the baby.

  8. Step 8

If clean clothes are necessary, quickly put them on the baby to prevent her from getting cold.

  9. Step 9

Once the baby is clean and comforted, then you can place any soiled clothes in a plastic bag and put them in the diaper bag.

  10. Step 10

Place disposable soiled items, like diapers and wipes, in a separate plastic bag. Keep them in an easy to see area so you don't forget to discard them at home.

  11. Step 11

Return all remaining supplies to the diaper bag.

Tips & Warnings
  • Only change the diaper when the car is not moving.
  • Make sure the baby has finished soiling the diaper.
  • If you drive an SUV, you might be able to open the back of the SUV and use the backseat to change your baby. This is a more comfortable alternative.
  • If you are with someone, ask them for help by handing you items as you need them.
  • You may be limited on time, so don't worry about cleaning the baby perfectly. You can do a better job when you get home.
  • Be sure to place enough diapers, wipes and clothes in the diaper bag for multiple clean-up emergencies.
