Step 1
Log on to Alaska's Division of Motor Vehicles Web site (see Resources below) and download an official application for a personalized license plate.

Print the application.

Record your name, daytime telephone number, current license plate number and its expiration date and your vehicle's VIN, year, make and body style. Indicate whether the vehicle is used for commercial purposes.

Select a plate style. Indicate why you are requesting a replacement plate.

Enter five different choices for your personalized plates using alphanumeric character combinations. The minimum number of characters is two and the maximum number of characters is six. Using a space in your message will substitute for an alphanumeric character. Differentiate between zeros and the letter "O" by placing slashes through zeros.

Provide any other information about your vehicle as applicable.

Sign and date your application.

Include your check or money order and a copy of your vehicle's registration. Modify the address on your vehicle's registration, if necessary.

Mail your completed application and payment to: The State of Alaska, Division of Motor Vehicles, 1300 W Benson Boulevard Ste 200, Anchorage, AK, 99503-3600.

Step 10
Receive your personalized license plates in the mail within 12 weeks along with a new registration and month and year tabs.

Affix the month and year tabs on your permanent personalized plates upon receipt.

Or, place an order for a personalized license plate electronically by accessing Alaska's Department of Motor Vehicles Web site (see Resources below) and entering the same information that is requested on the paper form. Opting to use the electronic version of the application lets you check for personalized license plate availability in real time. The only payment methods allowed are Visa and Mastercard credit cards.
