Tired of road raging? Take the high road and switch to road phrasing! Get a personalized license plate in Alaska to express your individual personality and make your presence known wherever the road of life may take you.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Credit card
  • Computer
  • Vehicle's registration
  1. Step 1

Log on to Alaska's Division of Motor Vehicles Web site (see Resources below) and download an official application for a personalized license plate.

  2. Step 2

    Print the application.

  3. Step 3

Record your name, daytime telephone number, current license plate number and its expiration date and your vehicle's VIN, year, make and body style. Indicate whether the vehicle is used for commercial purposes.

  4. Step 4

Select a plate style. Indicate why you are requesting a replacement plate.

  5. Step 5

Enter five different choices for your personalized plates using alphanumeric character combinations. The minimum number of characters is two and the maximum number of characters is six. Using a space in your message will substitute for an alphanumeric character. Differentiate between zeros and the letter "O" by placing slashes through zeros.

  6. Step 6

Provide any other information about your vehicle as applicable.

  7. Step 7

    Sign and date your application.

  8. Step 8

Include your check or money order and a copy of your vehicle's registration. Modify the address on your vehicle's registration, if necessary.

  9. Step 9

Mail your completed application and payment to: The State of Alaska, Division of Motor Vehicles, 1300 W Benson Boulevard Ste 200, Anchorage, AK, 99503-3600.

  10. Step 10

Receive your personalized license plates in the mail within 12 weeks along with a new registration and month and year tabs.

  11. Step 11

Affix the month and year tabs on your permanent personalized plates upon receipt.

  12. Step 12

Or, place an order for a personalized license plate electronically by accessing Alaska's Department of Motor Vehicles Web site (see Resources below) and entering the same information that is requested on the paper form. Opting to use the electronic version of the application lets you check for personalized license plate availability in real time. The only payment methods allowed are Visa and Mastercard credit cards.

Tips & Warnings
  • Permanent personalized license plates usually arrive within 12 weeks. If you move or do not receive your plates within this time frame, contact the department with your concerns.
  • The address on your vehicle's registration must be correct.
  • The department will not honor requests for personalized license plates that contain Ham radio call signs, prohibited characters, offensive messages or alphanumeric combinations that are already in use. Keep this in mind while choosing your plate message.
  • Personalized license plates cost more than a standard license plate. Be aware that additional fees will likely apply.
  • Do not place orders for vehicles with expired registrations, temporary permits, vehicles that are about to be sold or vehicles that are not in your name.
  • Once your order has been placed, all requests for order changes, cancellations and refunds will be denied.
