Tired of road raging? Take the high road and switch to road phrasing! Get a personalized license plate in Alabama to express your individual personality and make your presence known wherever the road of life may take you.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Log on to Alabama's Department of Revenue Web site (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Select a tag type from the drop-down menu.

  3. Step 3

Check for personalized license plate availability by entering four different messages using five alphanumeric character combinations. A dash or space in your message will substitute for an alphanumeric character.

  4. Step 4

Select one of the confirmed available personalized license plates.

  5. Step 5

Enter the vehicle owner's name and address, as well as the vehicle's make, VIN and year.

  6. Step 6

Provide any other information about your vehicle as applicable.

  7. Step 7

Review the reservation of your personalized license plate.

  8. Step 8

Provide a Visa or Mastercard to enter your billing information and process reservation fees.

  9. Step 9

Confirm the reservation of your personalized license plate.

  10. Step 10

Wait for departmental approval of your personalized license plate.

  11. Step 11

Find your local tag office's physical address at Alabama's Department of Revenue Web site.

  12. Step 12

Visit your local tag office within five days of your reservation to confirm the order of your personalized license plate. Pay all applicable fees for the plate.

  13. Step 13

Use the temporary tag provided in lieu of your permanent personalized license plate. Affix the provided month and year decals on your permanent plates upon receipt.

Tips & Warnings
  • Permanent personalized license plates usually arrive within four to six weeks. Until then, be sure to use your temporary tags. Mount them as soon as you receive them.
  • Follow all technical rules regarding personalized plate selection. Failing to do so may result in the department denying your request and a possible loss of reservation fees.
  • Using the online reservation system does not guarantee the availability of a personalized license plate. You must visit your local tag office in person to confirm the order and pay all fees.
  • Personalized license plates cost more than standard license plates.
