Obtaining a marriage license is an important step in making your marriage legal. Follow these guidelines on how to obtain a marriage license if you plan to wed in Utah.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Marriage license application
  • Pen
  • Divorce decree, if applicable
  • Cash (check individual counties for other forms of acceptable payment)
  • Photo identification
  • Social Security number
  1. Step 1

Obtain an official marriage license application in person at any county clerk's office. Only an unmarried male and an unmarried female may marry in Utah. Applicants may apply for a license in any county, regardless of residence within the state.

  2. Step 2

Present proof of age and identification, such as a driver's license or passport. If using a birth certificate, photo identification is also required. Applicants should also be prepared to provide their Social Security numbers, date and place of birth, names of their respective parents (including the mother's maiden name) and birthplaces of both parents.

  3. Step 3

    Complete and sign the application.

  4. Step 4

Pay the license fee and head to the altar. A license fee ranging from 45 to 50 dollars is applicable in most counties and includes two certified copies of the license. Some counties have no fee but charge an additional fee for the certified copies.

Tips & Warnings
  • A divorce decree signed by a judge must be presented if an applicant's divorce was final in the last 60 days.
  • Once a license is issued, it may be used immediately anywhere within the State of Utah. However, it will expire if it's not used within 30 days.
  • First cousins who are 65 or older can marry without consent. First cousins who are between 55 and 64 years of age must provide proof to the court that they are incapable of reproduction before receiving consent to marry.
  • Blood tests are not required in Utah.
  • Marriage license requirements often change. Verify all information with your local marriage license office or county clerk before making any wedding or travel plans.
